Richard Prince (Canal de Panama 1949 -)

About

Richard Prince was born in 1949 in the Panama Canal Zone. Prince's work has been the subject of major solo exhibitions, including at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (1992), and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Exploiting the images of mass media, advertising and entertainment since the late 1970s, Richard Prince has redefined concepts of authorship, ownership and aura. Applying his understanding of the complex transactions of representation to artistic creation, he has developed a unique signature, full of echoes of other signatures, but unmistakably his own.
His work probes the depths of racism, sexism and psychosis in mainstream humor; the mythical status of cowboys, bikers, customized cars and celebrities.
Two of his photographs, Spiritual America (1981) and Untitled (Cowboy (2000) are among the 10 most expensive photographs in the world.
