Cristóbal Toral Archduke Leopold William and his New Collection III
Toral’s version of the Archduke’s new collection is inspired by various paintings that David Teniers the Young painted for Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria, who was an important figure of the 17th century. A politician, writer, poet, and bishop, he had a grand fortune that allowed him to amass an important art collection with the best painters of his time, including Titian and Tintoretto, amongst others. David Teniers often depicted the Archduke surrounded by his entourage and his magnificent collection.

In this piece, Toral pays tribute to the Archduke as the grand 17th-century collector he was while also paying tribute to the various artistic movements of the modern age. On this singular canvas, Toral painted 55 artworks of various modern masters, reflecting the style of artists from Van Gogh to Picasso. The magical nature of art turns all these paintings, along with a sculpture by Man Ray, into a unified masterpiece.

“One must not forget that one is not only a witness to their time but also to the history they are familiar with. For instance, I am a witness to the emerging art of our era, but I am also a witness to how Velázquez, Goya, or Rembrandt painted…”
– Cristóbal Toral

Some of the artists represented in Toral’s version of the Archduke’s collection also include David Hockney, Salvador Dalí, Lucio Fontana, Marc Chagall, René Magritte, Piet Mondrian, Giorgio de Chirico, Andy Warhol, Frida Kahlo, Francis Bacon, and more.
