HUANG Yulong
Be My Side (L)
Huang Yulong is an international sculptor based in Beijing. His art employs certain cultural symbols and attributes, utilizing the concepts, ideologies, and philosophies from his past and present, to communicate his ideas of identity to the world. He doesn’t try to erase cultural boundaries or blur the border between ‘high’ and ‘low’. Yulong simply contours out the new reality that he, as well as legions of local ‘post-80s’ kids, who grew up under a sudden and impulsive influence of foreign culture, belong to.
Huang Yulong’s enthusiasm for hip-hop has been driving his artistic career for almost a decade. Fascinated with its free, passionate, and rebellious attitude, he uses his work as a channel to express the magnitude of emotion that takes over him when he listens to rap or dances to hip-hop music. Hip-hop came to his life earlier than art. While still in high school, the discovery of a ‘different’ and ‘new’ type of music served as a sheer means of dealing with stress and issues that a young adolescent usually goes through at that age. What started as an infatuation with something strikingly different and seductively foreign turned into a life-long commitment, a state of being, and simply a way of life. Yet, with his knowledge and outlook being largely shaped by Chinese culture, he taps into his tradition and heritage to enrich his work as an artist.

Gully
René, Nikki, Jean Michel, Andy and Pablo meet Rockwell, Nevinson Lichtenstein, Miller and Picasso 4
Gully is a French artist and graffiti artist born in 1977. GULLY’s entire artistic concept is based on the technique of “appropriation”. He practiced graffiti intensively from 1992 to the mid 2000s and then decided to change his pseudonym to spend his life as a graffiti artist to that of a studio artist in order to remain anonymous.
Gully’s work can be divided into several categories: mixed techniques on canvas, a mixture of oil and acrylic paints, markers and aerosols, and works on paper, often acrylic-based. His primary inspiration comes from his discovery, a few years ago, of the Appropriation movement.
Today he tells, in sumptuous architectural settings, stories of children who are amazed by art and more particularly by the Masters’ paintings, in little stories that could be seen as comics, without dialogue, allowing the viewer to imagine what the children are saying to each other.

Joshua Jensen-Nagle was born and raised in New Jersey. In 1999, he came to Canada to attend Ryerson University and began developing his distinct photographic style. Since then, he has become an established artist whose works have been exhibited in international museums and galleries.
His artworks, mainly featuring photography, do not however conform to the typical documentary style. Jensen-Nagle’s work evokes a sense that is more reminiscent of painting than photography. He explains: “One thing I try to achieve is a painterly aspect in my work, it’s how I understand photography.”
Jensen-Nagle achieves his unique style through the use of expired Polaroid film in order to obtain an extraordinary color palette. He also paints directly on his photographs and then re-shoots them to create images that explore the boundary between various mediums.

Along with Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, Tom Wesselmann is considered a major figure of New York Pop art. He rejected the principles of Abstract Expressionism and made bold paintings and inventive sculptures—both cut-metal works and assemblages—which riff on pop culture and art historical compositions. Women were a constant source of inspiration: Wesselmann’s most famous series, “Great American Nude” (1961–73), channels the brazen energy of American advertising and features flat, faceless female figures whom the artist often situated among stars and stripes. Educated at Cooper Union and the Art Academy of Cincinnati, Wesselmann got his start selling cartoons to magazines, newspapers, and ad agencies before he found success as a fine artist. Today, he’s represented in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museo Thyssen-Bornemisza, and the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi, among other institutions. At auction, his work frequently sells for seven figures.

Born in 1966 in Garges-les-Gonesse, France, Thierry Guetta, professionally known as Mr. Brainwash, moved to Los Angeles with his family when he was 15 after his mother passed away. Guetta owned a vintage clothing store in Los Angeles and occupied himself as an amateur videographer. He was constantly filming his life and those around him, amassing hours of footage. While visiting Paris, he came upon the secret identity of his cousin – the street artist Space Invader. During the remainder of the visit, Guetta followed Invader around and filmed him creating his street art. He quickly became fascinated with the clandestine art process and sought another subject when he returned to the States.
This led him to Shepard Fairey, a famous street artist in the United States. Guetta followed Fairey around for 10 months, taping his clandestine creations. Around this time Guetta was also taking film of many other street artists. It was soon after that Guetta met Banksy, infamous across the world for his provocative street art. Banksy allowed him to film with the caveat that his identity would be shrouded from the public. After taking thousands of hours of video of these street artists, Guetta edited them into a film. After watching the film, Banksy coopted the footage, telling Guetta that maybe he should try his hand at street art instead. He never knew how literally Guetta would take him.
Almost overnight, Guetta adopted the personality of Mr. Brainwash (MBW). Quickly, the new story became about Mr. Brainwash’s swift rise to notoriety as he attempted to pull off his debut exhibit Life in Beautiful in Los Angeles in 2008. This was the subject of the Banksy film Exit Through the Gift Shop. Though some were skeptical, the show came together and was enormously successful. The two-week show was extended for three months, and Mr. Brainwash made a name for himself in the street art world. Soon, commissions were rolling in. and in 2009, he designed the cover for Madonna’s Celebration album. Since, he has had many more successful shows, including pop-ups at Art Basel Miami and in New York City.
Mr. Brainwash’s art is a combination of pop imagery and contemporary cultural icons, leading to a pop graffiti street art aesthetic. Mr. Brainwash currently lives and works in Los Angeles.

When you first look at a work by Seny, you are irretrievably captivated by one thing: the gaze of his muses. If the gaze is the reflection of the soul, then this young artist of 18 has perfectly been able to uncover the secret of the people he paints in his portraits. At first glance, nothing in his work suggests that this creative, mature, and original work can be the fruit of such a young artist with such a discrete look. And yet, it is the case. Seny is a street artist from the suburbs of Paris, settled in Vitry-sur Seine, spotted thanks to his very first exhibition, unveiled in the heart of Paris.
Seny is astonishingly mature and humbled by his smashing entry into the art world. The young man is aware that this is only the beginning of a long road. Rocked since his earliest childhood by the artistic world, Seny has always been a shy, dreamy, curious, and reserved child. He quickly turned to street art as a means of expression and fulfillment, when he was in high school, then his choice was consolidated by being selected in a prestigious art school in Paris. It is thus quite naturally that he flourished today in the urban universe by making his works in his studio or in the street, influenced by the names of the greats that he references as a source of inspiration for pop and urban culture, Rap, cinema, and fashion…
For a few years now, he has been making his works from stencils, mixing spraypaint, acrylic, and Posca. He likes to experiment and risk new combinations of materials and supports.

John Zoller bends our perceptions of space in hypnotic contemporary Op art paintings that continue the legacy of artists like Victor Vasarely, Bridget Riley, Carlos Cruz-Diez, and François Morellet, who gained international recognition with the influential 1965 exhibition “The Responsive Eye” at the Museum of Modern Art. Zoller’s precisely painted geometric lines immerse the viewer in the world of the canvas and make its surfaces appear three-dimensional. In White Burst (2020), fine white lines shoot from a core of white acrylic paint in the center of the circular royal blue painting, as if mimicking sunbeams. To date, his “Celestial Mechanics” series (2017–) consists of more than 100 paintings—studies of abstraction, light, and space that reference the principles of astrodynamics.
