About

Lilac Gallery was established in 1972 as "LILAC Fine Art" by the Hungarian-born American artist Albert S. Nemethy. Noted for being one of the Hudson Valley's most legendary art figures, Albert S. Nemethy immigrated to the United States with his family in 1950 and eventually settled in rural Newburgh, New York, on the Hudson River where he established himself as a well-known artist over the next ten years. During the 1960’s his notability increased as he did commissions for various businesses and non-profit organizations. He painted murals, portraits of notable figures, and paintings of 19th-century steamboats, which were a common sight at the time on the river.

A longstanding dream of Albert’s was to open a gallery to showcase his work, his 6 children’s work, and the Fine Art collection he amassed over the years. In an old storage facility, Albert and his kids were able to open a gallery space which only held through for a few years. As life as an artist picked up heavily for Albert, being commissioned by the Kremlin in Russia and for President Nixon in the White House. Soon the gallery fell dormant, and it was not until some 40 years later that Lilac Gallery opened in Manhattan in 2012 with a mission to bridge Fine and Contemporary Art.

Today, Lilac Gallery aims to discover brand new art styles and art forms. Our main focus is on emerging international artists that explore new media in their concept with cutting-edge techniques, breaking the barrier of conventionality with expressive pieces. Passionate about handling a roster of contemporary artists, as well as showcasing American and European Fine Art, we aim to achieve excellence in every regard, maintaining a multitude of hand-selected, unique, desirable, thought-provoking and original artworks in our collection. Client satisfaction is undoubtedly one of the key pillars upon which the gallery was built, as we strive to meet each individual's customized needs by taking the time to cultivate personal client relationships and gain a solid understanding of where each of their particular interests lies.

Biography : JM Robert was born and raised in Macon, a small country town in the French region of Burgundy in 1987. JM Robert started painting at a very young age before getting an Art and decoration degree at the Beaux-Arts School in Paris. He studied graphic design and décor at the Métiers d'Art in Paris where he learned and refined his technique, in particular, that of trompe l'oeil. Today he strives to create paintings that draw from his experiences from a young age, expanding into impressive and powerful canvases. His work is characterized by a pictorial act in two phases. He first uses different techniques such as graffiti, scratching and scraping with knives and trowels to mimic the effects of patina, dirt, and degradation. Following the fluidity of this first layer, a face begins to appear in the eyes of the artist before he begins to paint his muse. He then hand-draws this face in black to simulate stencil work.

Exhibition : He exhibits in France, Hong-Kong and has done many live performances in street art festivals and collage around the world.

Detailed Description : On JM Robert canvases, colors burst into a myriad of fragments that no longer manage to find their meaning to take shape. The use of vivid colors often help to classify his work in the category of pop art but he crosses the boundaries of style to create pieces which exude a timeless emotion, bridging classical and contemporary, creating a completely unique style of his own. There are sad, joyful, sometimes distant looks. But these faces are always in the hope of something, a trace of life in a chaotic setting as in Pompeii or Hiroshima, Robert wants to represent the shadow of these figures. He picks up these feminine faces from everyday life, in his opinion, they bear witness of our time.

  • Cindy Shaoul  (+)

Biography : Cindy Shaoul was born in 1987 in New York. She is a visual listed American artist best known for her “Dripping Dots" series. Formally trained, Shaoul also paints impressionistic street scenes and portraits. With a Hungarian-Persian background that comes from a lineage of artists, Shaoul has matured unique expressions with her own voice and story to tell. She is the granddaughter and pupil of late world-renowned Hungarian artist Albert Sz. Nemethy, whose paintings can be found in the White House, the Kremlin in Russia, and Museums in the U.S. and Hungary. After completing her professional education at Emerson College in Boston, she later moved to Israel and Hungary to study culture and science while absorbing the energy of these new cities. In Budapest, she attended the Budai Art Institute from 2007-2009, later returning to New York City to continue her artistic education at the Art Students League, where she worked under the tutelage of Joseph Peller, Gregg Kreutz, and Tom Torak. In 2010 she met renowned street artist LA II (Angel Ortiz) who previously worked with Keith Haring in the late 1980’s. LA II strongly influenced her style with the powerful impact of 1980s hip-hop and graffiti. They began collaborating on a collection of exciting street art which later exhibited in Europe.

Exhibition : Her academic background first led her to paint realistic portraits and scenes from the street but the pieces that Shaoul is most passionate about are her “Dripping Dots”. This latest series explores an accidental technique which the artist has brought to life. From the left over paint of her pallet, Shaoul would paint circles to clean her brushes on to another canvas, just not to waste paint. These non-geometric shapes soon became part of a motif that was expanding all over the canvas. This eventually evolved into a discovery of an abstract and a very decorative contemporary style, completely new to her, and very much appreciated by her friends and teachers.

Detailed Description : Having built a diverse body of work since her early career ranging from portraits to colorful abstract paintings, Cindy is constantly reinventing her style working on a range of collections from Pop Culture to City Street Scenes. She is identified prominently for her colorful "Dripping Dots" series that is focused on a pointillistic style, achieving simplicity of beauty in the moment, creating a translucent but very rich pallet evoking a result which is clean, fresh and modern.
