About

Kuckei + Kuckei was established in 1993 by the brothers Ben and Hannes Kuckei. Their program is based on contemporary positions by international artists with whom they have established good and profound relationships and for whom they act as agents while accompanying their careers. Artists being represented by the gallery usually work conceptually, which is being expressed in various forms. In solo shows and group shows the gallery presents photography, painting, drawing, object and video installation.

Rothschild’s works open into the space, regardless of their medium. Not just nails, but also holes, thread, hair, straw, or bandages, double panes of glass and wooden frames link the surfaces of his image objects with the areas in front of and behind them. They stretch down to the feet of the viewer, suggest backrooms of the visual space, a light source on the rear of what is shown. They insist that they never appear as a surface alone, but only manifest in combinations which then assemble a spatial framework. They are metaphors with the help of which the superficial is inseparably linked to the unfathomable, cryptic, or remote.

  • Miguel Rothschild  (+)

Biography : Miguel Rothschild was born in 1963 in Buenos Aires. From 1982-1987 he studied at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires. Between 1991 and 1994 he went to study at the Hochschule der Künste, Berlin. Miguel Rothschild lives and works Buenos Aires, RA and Berlin, Germany.

Detailed Description : Miguel Rothschild is inspired by the idea of calling art into question. Out of this inner debate, reversible figures have emerged which all take photography as their starting point. Studied from a distance, Rothschild's impressive starry sky has a majestic quality; the moment we approach the picture, however, it metamorphoses into an allegory of shattered dreams. Thus perceived, aids such as pins and nails seem terribly beautiful. Their shining heads are set in myriads of stars: for in Rothschild's case, it is literally a question of getting to the very essence of all phenomena. He is a person who wants to discover, at any price, what lies behind the things – assuming, of course, that something does lie hidden behind them. Precisely because we live in a desacrilized world in which art is increasingly being made to serve as projection surface for transcendence, Rothschild is intent on analysing its properties as closely as possible. To this end, photographs must be laid on the dissecting table before they are hung up in the exhibition room. Once there, they are cautiously perforated; in an ironic manner, attributions are undermined and certainties largely divested of meaning. All that is static begins to shake: until it finally makes way for new modes of visual perception. Although he is not a dreamer, Rothschild is nevertheless inspired by that romantic epoch which regarded itself as the continuation of religion with aesthetic means, by the spirit of an age that was able to endure contradictions, knowing full well that – anchored in these – the beauty of all mysteries was waiting to finally be revealed.

Biography : Gerhard Winkler was born in 1962 in Bürstadt, Hessen. He graduated in 1988 from Städelschule, Frankfurt. Gerhard Winkler lives and works in Cologne, Germany.

Detailed Description : Gerhard Winkler has been photographing fish continually for more than 25 years now: and generally just before he, or a person of his trust, prepares them for eating. From his shots, he makes hand-colored, silver gelatine prints, after photographing the fish in their natural sizes against a white background. In this way, he consciously situates his works formally in the tradition of artistic natural-scientific illustration. With his glazing technique, he creates photographs of astonishing vividness. Over the years, he has created an extensive archive of edible fish from the Mediterranean and the Atlantic in this way. Winkler’s presentation is supplemented by a few of his wax sculptures on the same theme.
